Spread more compost and plant the barn pots for autumn!

Spreading More Compost & Planting the Barn Pots for Fall!-Hey guys, how's it going? Today? We're going to work on spreading some more compost and planting up the containers in front of the barn. So, the other day, we got the flower bed right in front of the house down. That looks so great. And some friends of ours were visiting and helped us with that. And then the wind picked up 30 to 50 mile an hour gusts, which it's very hard to spread compost. It's hard to even stand out here when it's like that. With all the powder kind of blowing through the air. So we packed it in that day. So we're going to finish up the piles that we do have out here today. So this pile here where we took some for that. Flower bed. We're hoping to, I don't know how far it's going to stretch. It's probably not going to do this whole space. But anyway, hoping to get a good portion of this area done. And then there is another pile right over there, will probably have to pick up and use some of it right here. Whatever we have left will start in on that other side. So we're just chipping away at it. Aaron's going to come out here and get in the tractor. And I'm just going to use a rake and spread it out. It goes really fast. And then for the barn pots, I think I'm going to utilize those yellow violas that I had intended to use on the west side. I didn't use them. So I've got these plants that are still really pretty, and I want to use them somewhere and I think they'll look really pretty and simple and bright in front of the barn. He Russell.

Alright guys, I just want to show you what it's looking like so far. It's not quite dead. I'm going to take a little break to get the barn Parts done, but you have to see what it looks like. So much better. What we focused on were the larger open areas where we could easily get the tractor. These areas right here. You can see. I skipped that I also kind of Skipped. We stopped right? And they're ish and we'll come in and just kind of scoop buckets out. You can see what's left in that pile there. We're going to actually need to order more, but the pile is kind of low and it's very hard to scoop it without scooping up, some of the light colored soil. So we'll go in with buckets kind of scoop it up and then we'll come in and just pour it around the edge. Isn't that a tremendous difference? Just seeing this versus this? It just brings such a rich look to the area. I love it.

Now over here, the goal was just to cover the white powdery soil. So this area or this line rather is not super straight. We did decide that we're going to go ahead and have both sides of the driveway lined with brick. I think like we had just thought about doing this side and eventually getting to this but I think it'll be nice to have it. Done on both sides. It'll be tidy and done. And then we won't be dealing with the wavy line. And not even that. Like I can handle that. But having rocks get into the flower beds and The Mulch getting into the Rocks. I don't know. That's always kind of a pain to keep them separate and then let me show you what we're going to do over here. Gosh, I can't even believe how much better that looks. So right here by these Berry beds. We are going to put a layer of wood chips rather than compost because compost is expensive and wood chips are free. And I think the wood chips are there they are lighter color. And I think the contrast will be nicer to have something light color below. So we're going to do like a couple feet around the

Bats. And then a few feet on this side and it will actually go all the way out to the gravel road over here. Beyond is a great structure of this is where we're planting grapes next year. So the wood chips will go all the way here. They'll cover this whole pathway here and then in between these beds, In between that bad and the First one here, and then this will all be grass and there's kind of a look back toward the house. There again, this area here will all be grass. I think Aaron's planning on seating that this fall yet. So we'll be a nice emerald green border around this area. It's just looking so good. But for now, let's head to the bar and let's get that project done because it'll give my arms a break for a little bit spreading compost by hand. I mean, you guys know, I know a lot of you have done that with a rake is very physically.

Taxing. It's a great workout. So here are the four pots were going to plant up. These are 24 inches by 24 inch squares that we've had out here for a long time. We got these pots from Home Depot. Absolutely. And they came tan, and I've been spray-painting them, painting them black, which I probably should make time to do. But I'm not going to usually we do that to cover like the hard water saving and just kind of spruce them up. But yeah, it look okay. And I recently trimmed up the boxwood spirals just a little bit. I didn't do a huge trim, just Cut off the really fluffy stuff. So this is what I've got. I do have quite a number of Snapdragon. So I think I'm going to use some of those, some of these cute yellow, violas pretty simple but striking I think so. Let's get it done.

Our guys is actually a new day. We got both projects, completed their looking so great. So let's take a look. So the pots here in front of the barn ended up just very simple but full and colorful. So I use the red snapdragons, a yellow violas. Just several of each one of those. I think it's really nice. I've kind of been into the no spill or sort of look lately kind of cleaner. You can see the design of the pot as well as a flowers in them, kind of like that.

See how sunny this area is, especially here in the morning. But all the were the same. I actually enjoyed the mix of annuals. We had it here throughout the summer. It was the supertunia Priscilla improved cake, pops purple verbena, which is a new one and they performed great. I'm trying to remember what else I put in there. They were all shades of purple and while they were beautiful colors and they grew beautifully, they were really big and full, they didn't pop in front of the white bar. And I think the colors were too pastel. So it's something I'm going to carry forward for next time. I think I need to do brighter colors that just show up against the light colored paint on the barn. So anyway, we learn every year. Don't we like what we like in certain spots, what we don't like and what we want to repeat or not, and all those sorts of things. Let's head out to be composted area. You guys are going to love that. I do. Doesn't that look so pretty to see the compost or mulch or whatever you're using around plants. It automatically, makes them look a lot better. So they look,

Up, the whole Edge looks really crisp. We only went a few feet back on this side, you know, we wanted to cover up the soil that had been exposed here when I edged, but we pretty much used that pile down. There's a tiny bit left there, but we're going to have more delivered so that we can kind of keep working our way back. And now we can really clearly see where we need to come in with a little more grass seed. Honestly, that would actually fill out, probably buy some point next season, if we just left it, but we'll go ahead and put a little bit more seed down and we got wood chips around the bear. A beds. Now. I have not decided whether or not I'm going to continue planting right here and maybe widen that walkway around the ends a little bit more. Or if I'm going to next time we mulch. Bring wood chips all the way out to the grass, so we can kind of just access the berry beds, really freely and openly. I'm not sure yet because there's a lot of access all the way around them, you know, we can access them there or if we turn down the pathway there, we can walk around them. We can't drive, really, really well between them anyway, so I don't know. I'm just going to leave it like that.

For now, and I, we really wanted to use the compost all the way to the end. So we could just see the grass pathway really clearly from start to finish. I think that contrast is nice though, because the beds are stained black. I need to wash them. Now that the powdery soil has been covered all, just hose them down and they'll stay nice and dark. But I think that that's a better look than using the dark compost right up against the black stain. It just would look like, I don't know too much. I am just loving it. Now, we have to do this exact same thing. Over here, which is about. I don't know, at least twice. If not more work than this side. Also. I can't remember if I already talked about this, just because we started this video yesterday, but I do have a grouping of three Renaissance Birch. Run has Renaissance reflection birch trees. This is the original one. We planted in the beginning. We planted these two later on, when it was super hot, you can see that one in particular, does not look happy, but it's going to be fine. I think it's still super flexible. There are new but Ed's already forming. I think it just shocked dropped its leaves and it just needs to have a little bit of a winter's nap and it'll come back fresh in the spring. I usually don't get too stressed out. When things act weird, the first year you're planting especially if you're printing right in the middle of a hunter plus degree Heat Wave kind of asking for it. I think the most exciting thing about this whole area is all this open. Space is all just sitting there ready for plants and the way where it's attacking, this whole area is just kind of popping whatever we like wherever we want it to.

And planting it. And that might mean, well, that we move some things are shift, some things later on, but it's just so fun. It's a fun way to do it. Not to have a very rigid or a formal plan. Now, there are some areas like I was thinking and around these birds trees and particular of planting, a little bit more of a meadow, because, I don't want to plant things too tall to where you can't see from the driveway over to the cut flower garden. It's a really pretty look when you are going up and down the driveway. Anyway guys, that is it for today. Thank you so much for watching.
