Succulent Planters Design with Drainage: Tips, Tricks & Inspiration-Succulents are a great low, maintenance choice for containers, and they also double as house plants in the wintertime. If you bring them in before your first, Frost, let's talk about planting up the traditional pop first. Here's what you'll need. You'll need your container. You'll need Cactus soil. You'll need your plants. You'll need a coffee filter or paper towels washcloths, something like that. And you will also need Some type of moss for your soil chop dress when you're all back. When you go to pick out a container for your succulents. You'll want to try to find something that shallow. The second one is root systems are shallow themselves and the plants are not usually that tall, so they look more like a showcase and they look a little bit better when they're in a shallow type Bowl. I found this pot at a flea market, and I thought it would look really great with succulents on our dining room table as a centerpiece. So once you have all your stuff gathered up, what you want to do is take your plants while they are still in their plastic.

Ears and arrange them. In your pot and this way when they're still in their plastic containers, it doesn't damage their root systems and you can kind of get the look that you want. Even if it doesn't look exact until you know, you actually go to planted up. So I'll just kind of arrange my plants in here.

I think I'll like that. This is the part where we use the coffee filter. I like to use a coffee filter, but you can also use a paper towel and old dishrag. Anything that water can get through. We place it at the bottom of the pot. And what this does is keeps the soil in the pot where it should be and allows the water to still drain that way. You eliminate some mess underneath your pot. And since we already have arranged the plants kind of how we want to look. We'll go ahead and dump some of the cactus oil into our pot. We won't feel it quite all the way. It's a good layer at the bottom.

About good and then what we'll do. I'll start with the big one first, you'll notice this pot is quite a bit deeper than my container, but that's not a problem. You just pop it up. Gently, you'll fluff a lot of this soil off. You can sort of rough up the roots a little bit and that won't hurt the plant. Just don't go too crazy. We'll make some room there. And we will plant it in like that, and at the end to you can kind of adjust. If you need to, if you want it, propped up a little bit more. So we'll just continue all the way around the pot. Do something green. Taking the plants is the fun part. There are hundreds and hundreds of varieties out there. And you can do mix and match, kind of like what I'm doing right now, or you can go monochromatic, you can make it seemed, we had a Mexican fiesta at our house in February and I did

Individual succulents and Cactus planted in pots. All the way down the center piece of the table and it looked really neat. What you'll want to do when you choose your plants when you're at the store, is read the tags, because even though all second ones usually want about the same care. You want to make sure that all the light requirements and water requirements are similar. And that way, they'll all be happy coexisting in a pot. And don't worry about making a mess. One other thing to think about, when you're at the store, looking at your plants, take a note of where they're at at the store and how much light there getting if they're in a spot, you know, inside will often times. You'll find the house plant section inside the store. You'll want to make sure if they're not close to a really bright window that you allow the plants a time of adjustment. Once you get them home, if you plan to put them in a sunny or location, that's called hardening off. So what that entails is when you bring them home and get them hot it up. You'll want to not put them right out in the

 Your son but every day you can move them closer and closer to that spot. So they get little bit more sun each day and that way they can acclimate and it won't harm them. Okay, so we're at the point now, where I can water this in and all the dirt that I've kind of fluffed up over the plants. I can wash off. When I'm watering them, get these plants, real nice and watered in here, at this point. I'm going to take my gloves off because I'm going to be using some Moss to top Costa soil. And what I have for that is a bowl of water. And I've got some Moss down here. I always dump them off in the water a little bit before I Form it around the plants because it makes it a little more pliable and you can form it easier. So, I just put a good couple handfuls in this bubble water. And we go and then you'll take out pieces. You don't even have to wring them out that much and just start forming around the pot. Down to the ground here. A common misconception it in succulent care is that they like bright Sun all day. They really don't they actually prefer a spot where they can get Bright Morning Sun but then filtered afternoon sun. It does depend on where you live. We live in eastern, Oregon and it gets really hot in the summertime over a hundred for days and days and days and it can really burn your succulents. So that's one thing to think about.

Cactus can usually handle a little bit more sun and succulents camp. This is making it look really pretty and finished. You'll want to feed your succulents. Come on the Fly, Like You Do Your Cactus. I water mine when they're outside. I check them every couple of days and give them a good drink when you move them inside for the winter time. I water every 10 days and then I give them a little bit of a diluted liquid Cactus fertilizer every other time I water. So they're getting fertilizer every 20. Days, and they do really well on that schedule. A couple other things that you can do with these Planters. When you're all done with the top dresses, you can add other elements into them. You can add Twigs, you can add really pretty Stones. You can really make them unique. In fact, you would even have to put this many succulents in this pot. You could pick one or two or three, and put a really neat Branch up in it with some rocks and that's really pretty as well. So it doesn't have to be a super costly. Jack, it'll still be beautiful. One. Other thing that I am going to use is red twig, dogwood, stems. I love to use these and Arrangements. It adds a little bit of height, but you can still see through them really good.
