Seed Starting Basics 2022

Hey guys, I'm starting some geranium and basil seeds today. And since you're probably thinking about getting your own started sometime soon. I thought I would go over a few seed, starting Basics, the first few months of the year, are really exciting for me. I work at a garden store and I can just feel the energy of the upcoming spring building, be lots of people are coming in and telling me about their garden plans and it's just a really fun time of year for me. The most important thing for success with seed, starting our light water heat, proper containers in seed, starting soil, and air circulation. So, I've got my containers, you can pretty much. That has a dome on it for my pots. To me. The Dome is essential. It helps create more of a greenhouse environment and it helps your soil not to dry out quite as quickly. And then I like to use peat pots because it makes it way easier when it's time to repot this tray will fit 32 of this size pot total. So I'm going to be starting 20 geraniums and 12 pots of Basil. Next is the seed starting mix you can find recipes for homemade seed starting mix all over the place, but I like to just Grab a bag of the already made stuff way easier. Way quicker. I'm using organic fox farm ocean forest soil, which is great for both seed starting and for more mature plans. I like to moisten the soil a little bit before adding it to the container. And then I fill up all the pots, almost to the top and then plant my seeds. I make sure to read the back of the seed package because it tells you how deep to plant your seed and it's also a wealth of a bunch of other information. I'm going to plant this sweet Italian basil because I use a lot of it when I cook and coral geraniums because it's me.

Our color out in the garden and I like to fill up all of my window baskets with them and if I plant them now and tell them correctly. I should have some nice Big Dreams to set out next.  Basic setup. It's just a two-foot, T5 tube with, no reflector, but it's going in a really bright room. So, it doesn't need as much. Help as if it were going to go in a naturally darker spot. There are really elaborate systems out there. And if I had the space, I'd probably be using one of those. Look for a stand though, that allows you to move the light up and down, I can start with my lower and then raise it up as a seedlings grow, keeping it about 4 inches away from the tops of the plants and it also helps to put the light on a timer that way you don't even have to think about turning it on and off in the morning and at night. Air circulation is the last thing to think about its what'll keep your new seedlings from damping off which is the most common disease in young seedlings. It's caused by a fungus that thrives in wet poorly, ventilated areas. It you'll know it damped off of an otherwise healthy looking young plant just Falls over and the stem will look like it was pinched just as oil level. So just set a circulating fan like this one on load nearby and not only will it keep your plants from damping off. It'll also make the stems on your pants, really sturdy. Cobbled together equipment for quite a few years now, and I'll probably still use that stuff somewhere else in my house, but some of the proper equipment can make the process a little easier and it makes it look nicer to.
